The Lord Jesus commanded all believers to get baptized! If we have come to faith in Jesus; by repenting of sin, realizing Jesus died on the cross for our sins and surrendering our lives to Him; our next step is to get baptized! It is a public statement and a symbol that we identify with, and are united with, Jesus Christ - His life, death and resurrection. We belong to Him. It is a step of obedience to Him. The Bible teaches that a new believer in Jesus Christ should desire to be baptized as soon as possible (Acts 2:41, Acts 16:14-15, Acts 8:35-36).
Being submerged in the water represents death to sin, and emerging from the water represents the cleansed, holy life that follows salvation. Romans 6:4 puts it this way: “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”
